Passing the Torch
The grass withers, the flower fades. A generation comes, a generation goes, flesh from dust and to dust, spirit from and to the Lord.
Ecclesiastes 12 reminds us of this sobering reality as the chapter details the physical, emotional, and spiritual changes that happen as we age in our earthly bodies and timelines. “Remember Your Creator in Your Youth”, reads the ESV translation section title.
“Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;” — Ecclesiastes 12:1
How can you remember your Creator today, as years past have faded and days to come await their dawning? In all our doing, thinking, speaking, loving, waiting, communing… let us remember God.
Likewise in our dressing. As we prepare our bodies to steward each coming day by adorning ourselves with apparel and accessories, how can we remember God? Scripture calls our bodies the temple of the Holy Spirit, and these are, after all, the vessels in which we travel through time and space in our short times on earth.
I hope that, just as Timothy’s grandmother Eunice and mother Lois were, that we would be women faithful to pass down the torch of faith to the generation after us. Wherever we stand in the stage of life and amongst the various ages we are, I pray that this would be the prayer of our hearts — that another’s faith had been ignited after the fire of our own love for the Lord.
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” — 2 Timothy 1:5
