Multiplying to Generations

“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.” — Proverbs 31:11

What does it meant to be a woman in whom her husband’s heart trusts?

If you are not married, know that you, as the Bride of Christ, can receive the trust of your Savior’s heart as your first Love and eternal Husband (Matthew 25:14-30, Luke 16:10).

The above verse in Proverbs 31 captures the story of Sarah in showing the beauty of a woman whose life and heart is so surrendered to God that she confidently bears fruit for the Kingdom that multiplies to generations beyond the years she will live to see. An excellent wife in whom her husband’s heart trusts, and because of her, he will yield no lack of gain.

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.” — Hebrews 11:11-12

Sarah was counted a mother of nations, by promise before she had even conceived a child. Her initial response? Laughing at the absurdity of the promised call the Lord had spoken over her life (Genesis 18:12-15). Yet in Hebrews 11:11, when her name is recalled among those who were of great faith, she was remembered not for her moment of doubt but for her enduring belief in God who spoke, who promised, who had brought to pass. The God who parted the Red Sea had opened her womb and brought forth good fruit, and she could not deny the power thereof even by her own moments of wavering belief.

While Abraham had received the promise of having offspring more abundant than the stars in the night sky, the woman with whom he had become one flesh was given this great mantle of being the mother of said offspring. The unity of their marriage and her submission in wifehood was fruit of a promise of old spoken since the Garden of Eden. The marriage covenant is a divinely ordained and orchestrated institution that reflects the heart of the gospel - Christ and His Bride, the church. Thus, a fruitful marriage that bears the fruit of trust and submission between husband and wife, and one where there is fruitful multiplication whether through offspring or other means, is a high blessing indeed. Notice how in Hebrews 11:11-12, it was Sarah’s trust that preceded the “therefore”, signifying her faith in God was what ultimately allowed the promise to Abraham to pass.

As women, not all of us are called or burdened to become wives and mothers. Yet all of us are called to make disciples, of all nations, and birth legacies for the Kingdom of God, continuing Christ’s mighty legacy of salvation for generations to come. We are called to be daughters, sisters, friends, spiritual mothers, mentors, guides pointing one another and the world to the Kingdom of Heaven and to the One seated on His rightful throne.

As one had put it, “Evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.” Whether you are leading your children to Christ and forming disciples to be salt and light in the schools and communities around you… whether you are called to overseas missions with your family, to evangelizing at your workplace, to writing articles about your faith and testimonies, to sharing stories around a campfire at youth groups, or sharing a sandwich and preaching the good news to the homeless man in your neighbourhood. You are called, dear one, and you are equipped with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to do mighty works in the name of Jesus.

I invite you to ponder and ask God what He is calling you to do to multiply the generations of faithful believers in this season of your life, and today. Whether that means sharing the gospel with someone in the grocery line or paying for another woman’s coffee and telling her of a Savior who died on the cross for her, I pray He imbues you with Godly courage and strength to boldly proclaim the story that saved your very soul.

We may be tempted to laugh at our stories, circumstances, personality traits, and more, thinking God couldn’t possibly use us to initiate or carry forth mighty revivals in His name. Like Sarah, we can so easily dismiss the very weak spots or peculiarities that God intends to glorify Himself through. But take heart, daughter. God doesn’t ultimately remember us by these faults and failures to see things the way He does, but honours us by remembering the shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ, if we choose to believe and hold onto the faith that calls us His own.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:6-7

As we end this series, let us pray.

Heavenly Father,

You see our needs, our wants, and our desires to glorify Your name in everything we do. As we have studied these women who echo the character of the woman You describe in Proverbs 31, we pray for a sharpening of our own character and countenance to reflect the ladies in Your Word who are so worthy of proper admiration. May we cultivate quiet and gentle spirits, have boldness and strength to share our faith with others, and be refined through fire to reflect the image of Christ to the world and to the people around us. Correct us, Lord, where we have strayed, but do so by the guidance of Your gentle hands. Thank You that we are led to repentance by Your kindness (Romans 2:4). Awaken our minds and our members to be surrendered to Your grace, knowing that it is by Your name we are saved and in Your strength we can carry out all that is pleasing in Your sight.

Make us women who multiply the fruits of Your grace to generations beyond us, Lord.

In Jesus’ mighty, precious and holy name we pray,

Amen.
