Coming To the Father

“Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” — Matthew 6:9

The sacred beginning of the Lord’s Prayer is of addressing our God, our Father in Heaven. Before any requests and petitions are made, we simply are called to know Him as who He is - our Heavenly Father. Jesus modelled this for us as the firstborn Son among all who are to believe on His name. And in knowing His name and place, we call for it to be hallowed. God’s Fatherhood inadvertently comes with the worship and praise that His name is worthy of.

To hallow means to set apart and to consecrate. When we pray for God’s name to be hallowed, we are allowing Him to take the rightful throne in our hearts and recognizing His holiness as He reigns in heaven and on earth. The Greek word used in Matthew 6:9 is ἁγιάζω, and it means to make holy; to ceremonially purify or consecrate; and to mentally venerate.

God’s name is already holy, and in addressing Him in the beginning of this prayer and asking for His name to be hallowed, we show reverence and a fear of the Lord around what it mean to call Him Father.

I wondered how women, as we go through the often mundane yet holy tasks of each day, may utilize the Lord’s Prayer to invite and to draw near to our God in times of abundance and need in the everyday moments. After all, we are able to meet and commune with Him through the veil that had been torn by Christ, whenever we should choose.

"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." — 2 Corinthians 3:18

"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh," — Hebrews 10:19-20

Tim Keller had said, on our relationship with God, "The only person who dares wake up a king at 3:00 AM for a glass of water is a child. We have that kind of access." I pray we not tarry to come to Him with each and every need, for He delights to meet us at twilight or at midday.

So, I’d like to invite you to center some of your prayers throughout the day on this first verse, addressing your Father who is in Heaven. And see what He would reveal to you about His name as you pray for it to be hallowed…

As we await His return…
