A Victorious Prophecy

Women of God tend to be depicted far differently in the Bible than women are defined in the world, by culture, or in the mouths of those who don’t know God. The stories that shape the lineage and legacy we as Christians have been grafted into tell of countless women of valor, of strength, dignity and integrity who have helped shape the history of God’s people.

“The villagers ceased in Israel; they ceased to be until I arose; I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.”” — Judges 5:7

This excerpt was taken from the chapter wherein Deborah sang a song of victory with Barak, after they had secured the Israelites’ freedom from Canaanite oppression. Here, she was bold in declaring and owning her God-given role and mantle as a spiritual mother, and her boldness came directly from the Lord who empowered her with the confidence to walk in the calling she had been given.

The verse from Proverbs 31 that I had chosen to represent Deborah’s character and the significance of her story describes the woman clothing herself with strength and dignity, laughing without fear at the future.

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” — Proverbs 31:25

Deborah’s leadership and boldness exemplified in her story as written in Judges 4 and 5 give us a model for fearless faithfulness and the victory we get to claim with our tongues and faith-fuelled actions, and aligns deeply with the blueprint of biblical femininity as provided to us graciously by God.

The chapter of Proverbs 31 is a prophecy of the warrior woman, and this is a foundational piece of the Fine Purple story and legacy. As women, the beauty of meekness and gentle spirits that we get to cultivate by the power of the Holy Spirit before God Almighty is juxtaposed and complementary to the divine strength and grounded boldness He imbues us with as we walk in the calling of being a woman of valor, an eshet chayil in the original Hebrew, as Proverbs 31 depicts biblical womanhood to be.

Deborah’s strength and song of victory consummating rest for Israel was a shadow of the perfect rest we as believers have access to through Christ Jesus.

“for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.” — Hebrews 4:10

Today, may we enter into God’s rest as prophesied by both Deborah and by Jesus Christ. Let us remember and be anchored in the reality that her victory in battle was both a testimony of God’s past faithfulness and steadfast character, as well as a divine foreshadowing to the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ on the cross and in His resurrection. Because of the Lord’s death and resurrection, His victory and reign over death and sin, our final enemies, we are freed to come boldly to His throne as a child comes to his Father.

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16

In the battles that we may be facing in our everyday or in this particular season, may we look to the past victories that the Lord had granted to His people, and remember that His unchanging character and conquering of death means sure safety, refuge and victory for us today.

“For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler

and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” — Psalm 91:3-4

May our days, lives, words, and choices deeply reflect the heart, determination and faithful obedience of Deborah. As we look back on Mother’s Day and honor the mothers in our lives both physical and spiritual, may we cultivate appreciation for the motherly figures in the Bible as well as Jesus’ own nurturing composition and His good design for femininity and motherhood.

““O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” — Matthew 23:37
